Material in architecture is generally associated with its individual and distinctive main characteristic, a reduced description which often undermines the ambiguity and true meaning of materiality. Material is often employed based on or with fundamental focus on expressing this preconceived identity, leaving space and material devaluated of their opportunities and possibilities. This publication examines materials in architecture through the eyes of the architects themselves. Interviews with 33 practices from around the world – including OFIS arhitekti, UNStudio, Casanova + Hernandez, and CEBRA –shed light on current paradigm shifts in brick and tile, wood, and glass.

Wood is suitable for use in multistorey building construction with barely any restrictions. This is new and requires creative rethinking of tried and tested practices in wood construction: classical categories can be replaced by mixed construction methods as necessary within a project, which yields completely new possibilities in designing wood structures. The Manual provides architects, engineers and wood specialists with the essential expertise on the new systematics and construction methodology, from the design to prefabrication to the implementation on site. It lays the grounds for mutual understanding among everyone involved in the project, to facilitate the necessary cooperation in the integral planning and construction process.

“This established textbook provides an understanding of materials’ behaviour through knowledge of their chemical and physical structure. It covers the main classes of construction materials: metals, concrete, other ceramics (including bricks and masonry), polymers, fibre composites, bituminous materials, timber, and glass. It provides a clear and comprehensive perspective on the whole range of materials used in modern construction, to form a must-have for civil and structural engineering students, and those on courses such as architecture, surveying and construction. It begins with a Fundamentals section followed by a section on each of the major groups of materials. In this new edition : The section on fibre composites FRP and FRC has been completely restructured and updated ; Typical questions with answers to any numerical examples are given at the end of each section, as well as an instructor’s manual with further questions and answers ; The links in all parts have also been updated and extended, including links to free reports from The Concrete Centre, as well as other online resources and material suppliers’ websites.”

"Fourteen case studies address the challenges of conserving the twentieth century's most ubiquitous building material—concrete. Following a meeting of international heritage conservation professionals in 2013, the need for recent, thorough, and well-vetted case studies on conserving twentieth century heritage became clear. This book answers that need and kicks off a new series, Conserving Modern Heritage, aimed at sharing best practices. The projects selected represent a range of building typologies, uses, and sizes, from the high-rise housing blocks of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation and public buildings such as London's National Theatre to small monuments like the structures at Dudley Zoological Gardens and a sculpture by Donald Judd. They also represent a range of environmental and economic contexts. Some projects benefit from high levels of heritage protection and access to funding, while others have had to negotiate conservation with stringent cost limitations. All follow a rigorous conservation approach, beginning with a process of investigation and diagnosis to identify causes and target repairs, balanced with conservation requirements to preserve significance."

Theme of the book is the materiality of architecture in the design process. When does the idea for the materiality of an architecture arise? What role does the context and its character play? Does the typology have an effect on the material formulation of buildings? What relevance does the function have for the choice of a material? Is the aging ability of materials taken into account in the design? And can light be understood as material? These and other questions characterize the process of designing buildings for craftmans. The models and drawings of the designs alternate with the contributions by the architects Andreas Bründler, Piero Bruno and Thomas Kröger and are as readable in connection with them as they are independent of what is written.

"Marble is one of the great veins through the architectural tradition and fundamental building block of the Mediterranean world, from the Parthenon of mid-fifth century Athens, which was constructed of pentelic marble, to Justinian's Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and the Renaissance and Baroque basilica of St. Peter's in the Vatican. Scholarship has done much in recent years to reveal the ways and means of marble. The use of colored marbles in Roman imperial architecture has recently been the subject of a major exhibition and the medieval traditions of marble working have been studied in the context of family genealogies and social networks. In addition, architectural historians have revealed the meanings evoked by marble revetted and paved surfaces, from Heavenly Jerusalem to frozen water. The present volume builds upon the body of recent and emerging research - from antiquity to the present day - to embrace a global focus and addressing the more unusual (or at least unexpected) uses, meanings, and aesthetic appeal of marble. It presents instances where the use of marble has revolutionized architectural practice, suggested new meaning for the built environment, or defined a new aesthetic - moments where this well-known material has been put to radical use."--Provided by publisher.
